PERMANENT ARTILLERY AND
POLICE DESPATCHED
A MAXIM GUN TAKEN
On Saturday evening Police Inspector Hickson,Sergeant Treanor and Constables Henry, McNeely and Goulet left for Hokianga from Onchunga in the s,s. Glenelg, arriving there yesterday. Yesterday orders arrived here from Wellington iov 'an armed detachment, of the Permanent Force under Captain Coyle,
:of the Torpedo Corps (Lieut. Hume being ] away on leave, to proceed to Hokianga at i once. The s.s. Gairlocli was wpeeially j chartered to take the men to liokiau^a, j where they join Colonel No wall's force from j Wellington, bringing up tho total strength of the held column to about 120 men. The Pennauenl Force men were brought across :to town by a special ferry-steamer at 2..50 ! a.m. to-day, and were sent, out at 3 o'clock ,by special train to Onelmnga' Captain I Coyle was in command of tho Auckland : detachment, which consisted of Sorgeant- ; Major iiush and '21! men. The force took ;a Maxim <^\u\ from, the. forts with them, and 2,000 rounds of ammunition for it.

Tho | force left Onehunga .shortly after live /o'clock this morning, eroMsinj; the Manu- | kau bar shortly after seven o'clock. .Kou; police constables were despatched, Constables Skinner, Jloliis, Johnson and : McNamara. They were, armed with their revolvers and 20 rounds of ainnitinition I each.
