SALE OF LEVANTER.
The announcement that the celebrated steeplechaser Levanter'was to be sold by auction at Messrs Hunter and Nolan's yards to-day attracted a large croAvd. Mr J. P. Philson acted as auctioneer: 'Bidding started at 100 guineas, and this was soon capped Avith another 50 " guineas.' Bids cause in rapid succession, and Mr J. Beckett offered 245 guineas. Then MiHenry Nolan, acting on behalf of Mr H. McGregor, of Wanganui, bid 250 guineas, but Mr Beckett was not to be outdone, and at 255g5, amidst applause, lie became the owner of the Captivator gelding. The gelding Retreat (by Tetford—Success) Avas bought by Mr 'R. .Brown- for 19gs. A three-year-old mare ,by Orestes—'Cushla ( and the-pony.Fauiitlercy ,AYsre .offered.and pafesed." /V ""' ■"" '' ■ '.""'] ■ ?- w' v-/ m^!''
