In connection Avith the expectation that Spanish privateers will take part in the Avar between Spain and America, the following facts are interesting:-— A hundred years ago privateering Avas a flourishing industry, and betAveen 1793 and 1814 no less than 10,871 British ships, with over one hundred million sterling, were captured by French privateers, one of the latter alone taking in. two months prizes worth nearly £300,000. The last experience England had of privateers Avas in connection with the famous Alabama. For permitting this vessel to leave the Mersey, England had eventually to pay the American Government the enormous sum of £3,000,000 in payment of damages done by the cruiser to the American mercantile marine in the interests of the Confederate

cause.
