ABOUT THE CALENDAR.
A century is one hundred years and of course is not complete'until the close of the one hundred years. Thus the first century comprised the years from 1 to 100 .inclusive; the second 101 to 200 inclusive, and so on. . The year 1800 therefore must be reckoned us the last year of the IStiv century and 1801 as the first year of the 19th century.
The .Christian era counts the time from the supposed year of Christ's birth. It was adopted in the sixth century and drawn up by Dionysious, a monk of Rome who placed the first year as the fourth of the one hundred and ninety fourth Olympiad of Greek chronology, and the seven hundred and fifty third year from the founding of Rome. Later computations seem to show an error in fixing- the date of the birth of Christ, and it is now supposed that Christ was actually, born four years before the date chosen for the opening; of the era.
