COLONIAL CHARACTERISTICS.
It would have been interesting to have had from so keen an observer as Mr Davitt a comparison "between the character of the Australian and New Zealander, and a few o£ his own ideas as to the effect of climate'and stock in producing races of so different a type. He dismisses the subject, however, by remarking that the people, as a whole, strike one as beingsomewhat stronger in build than those in the other colonies, and that the traits of virility, fine fighting qualities and love of independence conferred upon the Maoris by the physical and climatic character of the country 'engrafted upon those with which the British and Irish race are also endowed must give to the future New Zealand Commonwealth all the strongest qualities of an indomitable nation.'
