WELLINGTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this clay. THE NEW ZEALAND CROSS. Before leaving for England Colonel McDonnell wrote a letter\lenying that he had preferred- any claim for the New Zealand Cross on his own behalf, but stating that as the Government had re-opened lists for the distinction he had again recommended Messrs Northeroft, Scannell, and O'Connor for their heroic and devoted actions performed in the late sixties, hitherto unaccountably ignored, but which are known throughout New Zealand. I am informed on good authority that an inquiry into the whole question of conferring the New Zealand Cross Avill be made the subject of a motion in Parliament next session. TECHNICAL EDUCATION. The Cabinet has resolved to grant £1,500 for the Wellington Technical School, equal to the sum voted by Wellington Industrial Association out of the surplus from the exhibition receipts devoted to the same object. THE GOVERNOR. The Governor is expected in Wellington next week en route to Hawke's Bay. THE POLYNESIAN SOCIETY. Messrs S. Percy Smith and Edward Trcgear, hon, secretary of the Polynesian Society, have received diplomas of honour from tlie Anthropological Society of Italy. DAIRY PRODUCE. The dairy produce shipped by the Ruahine for London comprised 137 i tons of butter and 114 tons cheese. MOTOR CARS. A novel point cropped up in connection with the application by Mr W. McLean for a license for his two motor cars recently imported. The city by-laws contain no specific provision applicable to the case and the point will be referred to the city solicitor for opinion. Mr Friend, clerk of the House of Reps., who has undergone an operation for throat disease, is progressing favourably.
