CRICKET.

HAWKE'S BAY V. AUCKLAND

A DRAWN GAME.

The cricket match between Hawke's Bay and Auckland was concluded on Saturday atternoon, though the fact of the visitors having to leave early to catch their steamer prevented the game beinplayed out to a finish. I. was therefore declared a draw. Such a termination appeared inevitable when Auckland began to make something of a stand in their second innings. It was plain the home team could not win the match, as they had only about two hours in which to 'make the necessary 201 runs. Their only hope, therefore was to play out time, and make as creditable a draw as possible. In this the local men succeeded, for at the call of time they had put on 333 for the loss of 5 wickets, Mills being not out with 54 to his credit. Had the game been played out, the hnish would probably have been a very close one, as Auckland had 5 more wickets to fall, and 67 to get to win. THE PLAY. Auckland began their second innings at hve minutes past three, Kallender and Totman going in first. The start was not very auspicious, for Totman, after scoring a single, and before his partner had commenced at all, was clean bowled by Laws I—l—l- G. Mills joined Kallender, and these two " held the fort'"' for along while. The scoring at first was very slow, the first 20 taking over half-an-hour to compile. Kallender was missed in the slips" by White, when he had made 4, and stayed to ! put on 31 more before he finally departed. Fannin's bowling did not prove so deadly as in the first innings, and both batsmen got him away to leg for 4 several times. Sixty was hoisted as the result of an hour's play. Both men batted steadily, and took no risks, their object being plainly to play for the draw. AfterS moreruns had been added, Kallender was caught off Gore by Staite— 68—2—35. Stemson followed, banged Gore away for 3, and then next over skied a ball from Fannin, the bowler taking the catch safely—7l— 3—3. Walton, the next man, opened well by getting Fannin away to leg for 4. Presently he had a narrow escape, and but for a wild return he would haveeasily been run out. The scoremounted until Walton brought up the century with a splendid drive for 4 off Laws. Mills had now reached 40 and was thoroughly set. The colt put Laws away again for 4, but a change of bowling effected his down- , fall, for Fannin's second ball proved fatal. 114 —4—20. Waltons score was composed of four 4's and four singles. He showed capital form. Warren joined Mills, who was steadily approaching his half-century. The newcomer started off by scoring 7 off the first over Lusk sent clown to him, but after adding another single he was given out leg-before to Fannin. 124—5—8. About seven minutes of play remained when Labatt joined Mills, and when stumps were drawn at 5.15 p.m. these two were still at the wickets, the score being then 133.
