NEWTON.

The ordinary meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night, there being in attendance Mr J. W. Shackelf ord (the Mayor), and Crs. Davenport, Brown, Warnock, Brinsden, and Sexton. Leave of absence was granted to Councillors Ambury and Stewart. Water Consumption.—The Town Clerk reported that the consumption of water for the week ending February 28th was 160,000 gals, and for the week ending March 7th, 168,000 gals. , Wilton-street.—Mr J. Thornes -wrote that the Council's workmen had lowered the footpath about 2 feet in front of two cottages in Wilton-street, for which he is agent.. By this means they had lowered the fence, and he submitted the Council should make good the damage done.—lt was agreed to reply that the Council accepted no responsibility in the matter. Night-soil Contract.—A letter from Mr J. Crawford complaining of the attendance of the contractor was referred to Mr Casey for an explanation. Murdoch Koad.—lt was agreed to repair the footpath in front of Mr Cribble's new house.'

Gully Drainage.—Mr J. Boy]an submitted plan and estimate of cost of drainage of the gully near junction of Murdoch Road and Maekelvie-street. The estimated Wstof the work was £89 16s 6d.—The plan was! approved of, and it was agreed to proceed with the work.

Works Report.—The Foreman of Works report dealing with minor work done in the borough during the fortnight was read and adopted. The foreman stated that it i» necessary to erect a shed on the Council's allotment for the storage of tools, etc. It Was agreed to get an estimate of cost. Ksh Offal.—The Sanitary Inspector read a written complaint against Mr McNair for ff*M.ng.-fish offal on art allotment in Wolseley Road. Mr McNair was present and promised the Council that he would not offend again. The Council under the circumstances agreed to take no.action. Cox's Creek Bridge.—lt was agreed to erect new fencing just past Cox's Creek fridge (on the borough side). City Refuse.—The Mayor brought up the question of city refuse being " dumped down "in the borough. It was resolved 'hat the Sanitary Inspector bring up a report on the matter at next meeting and that the Legal Committee consult the Council's solicitor as to their legal position °n this matter. . Accounts.— Accounts amounting to £91 lbs 2d were passed for payment.
