CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The last meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Council prior to the annual public meeting took place yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs B. Kent (Chairman), A. H. Nathan, S. Vaile, A. MeCorquodale and J. Reid.
Five replies were received in answer to the circular letters sent out by the Chamber to different mining companies, suggesting that miners should bo paid by the week in cash, instead of by cheque every month as at present. T^he Kauri Freehold, Gold Estates, Waihi, Waihi Consolidated, and New Zealand Exploration Companies each replied to the circular to the effect that it was not advisable to disturb the existing arrangements. Mr Nathan said there seemed to be a good deal of dissatisfaction with the present system. The working man was in a far better position when he got his wages in cash once a week. The Chairman said that any further action would have to be left to the new Council.
The Telegraph Department advised that the Government were not at present prepared to reduce the cable rates, as there was still a considerable loss on the intercolonial business. The matter was referred to the incoming Council, as was a letter from the Harbour Board asking for suggestions re improvements in the receiving and delivery of cargo. The annual meeting of the Chamber will be held on Wednesday next at 3 p.m. in the Chamber of Mines.
