WELLINGTON R.C. SUMMER MEETING.

WELLINGTON, Saturday.

At the first day's racing of the Welling- + n Racing Club's Summer meeting, rain ntinued with but slight intermission throughout the .if ternoon. The win of Mr Stead's horse, Uniform, in the Cup wasextreniely popular, and the rider and horse received an enthusiastic ovation on returning to the scale. The same may be said of Captain Russell's success in the Wellesley Stakes, which event was won by his filly Tigress- St. Paul got the worst of a bad tart in the Cup, and never seemed torecover. The sum of £10,320 passed through tlie totalisator, as compared with £9,371 on the corresponding day last year.

Haria took the lead in the straight, Uniform, Leda, and St. Paul following in that order. The bend was passed without any change in the positions, but at the hill St. Paul went up and passed Leda. At the back of the course the field commenced to close up, and at the four-fur-long post, the pace having increased, Unfform shot up and displaced Haria. At the same stage St. Paul began to open out, and soon forged into second position. Hounding the bend near the road Leda came with a big rattle, but the' effort was only momentary, although she managed to pass Haria.
