WAIKATO NEWS.

HAMILTON, Monday.

At time of writing rain is falling heavily here, and it is sadly needed in the district.

The entries received for the forthcoming meeting of the Waikato Amateur Athletic Club are eminently satisfactory, and considerably outnumber those of any previous occasion. The number includes D. ;Wilson, A. E. George and It. A. Dexter, aud 12 or 14 other Aucklanders. G. B. Beere, who is training for the next championship meeting, will "also be. a competitor iii the distance events, and the meeting between him and George will be looked forward to with interest. It is almost certain that an excursion train will run from Auckland, returning home in the evening, and this should prove most convenient for tiie Auckland contingent.

NGARUAWAHIA, Saturday. : The polo season \Wf O'penecl here last Wednesday when there 'was a very good attendance of members, A scratch match was organised, and an interesting game terminated in a draw. The matches between the Auckland and Waingaro teams to be played here on the 29th January are exciting a great deal of interest. On the same day the local Rowing Club held their trial fours, in which-five crews competed. In the first round Aubrey's crew defeated Terawhiti's, and Hunt's beat Rathborne's after a most exciting struggle, the boats being separated by a third of a length at the finish. .Paynter's crew beat Terawhiti's. In the second round Aubrey's crew defeated Hunt's and Paynter's crew had a bye. In the -concluding round Aubrey's crew beat Paynters'. The senior and junior crews to represent Ngaruawahia at the Regatta to be held on March 17th have already been picked and they are now making active preparations for the contests.
