YESTERDAY'S PLAY.
Just as we wore going to press yesterday afternoon the news of J. R. Hood's having carried off the championship of the colony ■ft-as received, and the fact announced in a second edition. The struggle between the D ew champion and H. A. Parker was a very tough one. Both fought with great spirit, hat it was noticeable that Parker was by n 0 Il' cans i*l -'is best form, while Hooper was in splendid trim.' In the first set the latter played a winning game throughout, the score being 6 —l. In the second set it looked as if the position was to be reversed, but after play had been (roin»' on for some time Hooper advanced with 0 big strides and finally won. B—6. The third set was the most even of the three, hut again Hooper's line play triumphed, 6—4, which concluded the struggle and the great event of the meeting. MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES.
In the final round of the Men's Championship Doubles H. A. Parkerand C. St. (;. Gore met J. M. Marshall and F. M. B. Fisher. The match was an exceedingly interesting one, and was watched keenly by the spectators. Some line play was. v/itnessod, i-but---Parker and,. Gore .were evidently the stronger, and they eventually Avoii. 6—l, 6—2, G—l. ' . LADIES' SINGLES. Miss Kennedy met and defeated Miss Gorrie. o—3, 6—o. MENS HANDICAP DOUBLES. In the third round F. M.. B. Fisher and J, Paterson beat Sinclair and McLeod. gl_6, 6—4, 6—4. W. A. Styche and H. Garcia (owed A-15) beat H. Gentles and J. Caldwell (received la£).. 6—2, 5—6, 6-2. In the fourth round Styche and Garcia beat G. Staite and E. Rees (owed 15). 6 —3, 6-4-COMBINED HANDICAP DOUBLES. Mrs Newell and A. G. Cooke (scratch) beat Miss E. Van Asch andC. D. Kennedy (received §-15): 6—l, 5—6, 6—4; Miss Bull and P. Marshall (owed 15=1) beat Miss Read and S. G. Smith (scratch) : 6-2,6-3.
Miss Bull and P. Marshall (owed 154) beat Miss Whitelaw and J. Caldwell (received 154) -. I—6, 6—3, 6—4.
LADIES' HANDICAP DOUBLES.
In the third round Mesdames Newell and Gentles (received -^-15) beat Miss Gorrie and Mrs Chapman (owed 15): 6—5, 6—4. Misses Brabant and Sloman (received 154) beat Misses Nunnely and Stewart (owed 30): 6—l, 6-1.
