INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET.

CANTERBURY DEFEATS HAWKE'S

BAY.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

NAPIER, Thursday. The Canterbury v. Hawke's Bay cricket match was concluded on the Recreation Ground this afternoon. Heavy rain fell ou Wednesday night, which played havoc with the wicket.

Canterbury, continuing their firstinnings, made good use of their time, despite the fact that the wicket was unplayable. Ridley was in fine form, keeping the field busy until he sent one into Cato's hands oil' a soft ball from Lusk, having compiled 55. The first four wickets had put on 147 runs. Both Pearce and Sims fell lbw to Fannin, adding 26 between them, and then Wildingwas given out lbw to Wilson. With Wheatley and Clarke together the score gradually rose, the ninth wicket falling for 197. Fowke joined Clarke, but only added four, the former having played carefully for 18. With 25 extras the total for the innings was 217. With a lead of 32 on the first innings Hawke's Bay went in for the second time, but fared most disastrously. The treacherous state of the wicket and the excellence of the bowling gave the local batsmen little opportunity. The first two wicket fell for four runs, and when four more runs had been added two more wickets were captured. Eight wickets had fallen for 36, and the whole innings closed for 42, Marshall being the only one to reach double figures (16). Rees took four wickets for two runs, and Pearce live for 20. For Hawke's Bay Fannin had the best bowling averages with 5 for 67. Canterbury had only to make 75 to win, but they lost live of 'their best wickets in the attempt, winning the match by live wickets.
