WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

♦ The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waitemata County Council was held today, there being in attendance Mr John O'iSeil (chairman), Crs. Chas. Bruce, Hatfield, Wilson, Cochrane, McEwen, Mackay, Sinclair, and Reynolds. Finance Committee.—The report of this Committee stated that tenders had been accepted for work at Northcote, Birkenhead, Kumeu-Waimauku road, Kaukapakapa, forming Henderson Valley road, and for carting and spreading metal at Kaukapakapa, Kumeu station and Mairetahi. The report of the Committee was adopted. Finance.—Monthly accounts amounting to £165 5s lid were passed for payment. Mr Mays reported the Bank overdraft was reduced to £102 2s 4d.

River Road.—A petition was read from ratepayers pointing out the necessity for some improvement being made to the River Road, below Mrs Mackie's, near Woodville.—lt was agreed to defer the matter until April next. Claim for Compensation.—ln reference to an application from Mr Walter J. Harris for £30 compensation for land taken for a road, the Council decided that the letter be received.

Wharepapa.—Mr J. M. Phillips -wrote that he required the road forming to an extent from the railway gates, north of the Wharepapa Railway Station, to the first gate on his property. He would have the work done, charging for labour only. — The offer was accepted. Parkhurst Road.—Mr W. J. Green, occupier of section 3, block 10, in the Kaipara survey district, asked the Council to have the road cleared and made to the section.—The matter was left in the hands of Cr. McEwen, with power to act. Offer of Road.—Mr W. Coleman, solicitor, instructed by the executors of the late Mrs J. C. Boord, on their behalf offered to the Council a road 100 links wide, from the cemetery reserve at the western end of section 8, Taupaki block, along the northern boundary of the section, and through the western portion of section 1, parish of Waipareira to the old railway line, free of any payment. —The offer was accepted. Ararimu Bridge.—Mr E. C. Lockett wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Ararimu Bridge and a box culvert three chains east of the bridge.— Referred to the Engineer with power to act.

Huia.—Mr L. J. Armstrong appeared and asked the Council to remove an obstruction and define the by road oft" the main Huia Road.—The matter was left in the hands of the member for the riding to see the obstruction was removed.

Parakakau.—Mr Win. Hellyer, of Parakakau, "wrote that he had no objection to the Council closing the- road through Moore's with the exception of about 4 chains on lot 35. The track was used by a great many people besides the writer. It ■was resolved that the old road be closed on the conditions named by Mr Hellyer. Swing Gates. —Mrs Annie Foster asked the Council to erect two swing gates on the Waimauku-West Coast Road—one on the northern and one on the southern side of Cooper's Hill. Granted. Albany.—Mr T. J. Stewart asked the Council to make a road to his Crown land at Albany. —It was resolved that the Engineer report on the cost of the work. Takapuna-Northcote Footpath.—Mr L. Hames wrote on behalf of residents offering £3 10s towards cost of formation of a footpath on the road between the Lake School and the Northcote Bridge boundary.—The offer was accepted, it being agreed to spend £7 or £8 on the work.

Northcote Point. —A petition was read from ratepayers and residents of Northcote asking the Council to lease that section belonging to the Education Reserves Board in order that the only means of public access to the beach near the point might be preserved. The matter was left in the hands of Mr Bruce with power to act. •

Upper Waiwera. —Mr F. Bayer's application for money to be spent on road leading to his land was referred to the Engineer.—A letter from Mr J. Week, of Upper Waiwera, in reference to closing a piece of road through Mr Boyer's property, a short distance from the county boundary, was deferred until next meeting. A largelysigned petition was read from settlers and ratepayers within the Wainui riding asking the Council to le-consider their decision and grant Mr John Week, of Upper Waiwera, permission to deviate the road through his property, and thus save him unnecessary fencing.—The Council agreed to adhere to their former decision. Mr Hatfield dissented.

Wainui-Wade Road. — A 'petition was read from settlers of Wainui calling attention to the bad state of the main road from Wainui to W Tade.—Mr Hatfield spoke in support.—lt was agreed to spend £20 on the road, work to be done by tender.

Tenders. — Tenders were considered as follows : — Forming and pipe-claying 15 chains of road, Dairy Flat : Tender declined. — Constructing road through Mr Scruby's property, Upper Waiwera : Thorburn and Brunton. (Accepted).—Repairing Smithson's Creek Bridge, Upper Waiwera: No tender was received.—The Engineer was instructed to get the work done.

The Council then rose.
