INDIA AND THE SOUDAN.
COST OF BRITISH OPERATIONS.
IMPORTANT SPEECH BY HICKS
BEACH.
LONDON, December 11
Speaking at Bristol Sir Michael HicksBeach said if Great Britain ignored the responsibility of controlling the Indian frontier Russia would certainly intervene and approach in dangerous proximity to the frontier. British operations would cost a million and a half sterling. Referring to the Soudan campaign he said the forces under Sir Herbert Kilchener would advance upon Khartoum when a fitting opportunity presented itself. The British Government intended to ask Parliament to pass a vote in aid of defraying both the Indian and Soudan campaigns.
CALCUTTA, December 11
It ib estimated here that the Indian frontier war will cost the Government 35 million rupees.
THE BRITISH ADVANCE
LONDON, December 11. It is expected 6,000 British troops will take part in the advance of the Soudan Expedition up the Nile in February next at Metemneh, -where the Khalifas followers are assembled. A strong force has crossed the Nile and erected forts.
