FIRE AT PARNELL.

A seven-roomed house in St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, the property of Mr Jas. Slater, was destroyed by fire this morning. The house was occupied by Mr Frederick Reissj painter, and when he and hjs wife retired at 9 o'clock last night everything appeared safe. About 5 o'clock this morning they were awakened by Mr Henry Littlejohn, who had discovered the fire. The flames by this time had obtained a strong hold, and the occupants had a narrow escape from death by suffocation in their efforts to get out of the burning house. The building was almost destroyed, only the charred walls being left standing. Constable Hutchison was present and rendered all possible assistance. The house was valued at £175, and was insured for £100 in the Victoria Office. Mr Ileiss' furniture, the value of which was estimated at £200, was insured for half that amount in the Royal .Office. All the furniture was destroyed, with the exception of a few articles, Avhich were rescued in a very much damaged condition. The origin of the fire is unknown.
