An Illicit Still. —James McAmmon was charged with having been found in possession of an illicit still at Puhipuhi, whereby he has forfeited the sum of £500. McAmmon was remanded last week on a charge of being in possession of and working an illicit still. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr J. A. Tole) asked for a further remand of eight days, as the prosecution was not quite prepared to go on. The accused objected to the adjournment, saying he had already been a week in custody. The case was ultimately adjourned till Friday. A Sailor in Trouble.—A seaman named John Craig, belonging to the barque Clan McLeod, pleaded guilty to assaulting John Doyle, a sailor oil' the barque Excelsior, and also to using obscene language in a public place. —The accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to rnn concurrently. Alleged Theft.—Edward Barrett, Win. Rhodes, and Arthur McKcown, three young men, were charged with having stolen 12 shirts, value £2, from the shop of Alfred Moore, in Karangahape Road.—Mr Napier appeared for Barrett and McKeown and Mr Jackson Palmer for Rhodes, all three pleading not guilty.—For the prosecution James Hays stated that on the night in question he saw three men standing with .McKeown outside Moore's shop. One of them snatched up a box and the three ran down the lane by the shop. They were followed by McKeown. Constable Johnston deposed to iinding a box in the lane with one shirt in it. He waited, and saw the accused Rhodes come and take the shirt out, putting it under his coat. Witness gave chase, but not finding the shirt on the accused, did not arrest him then. — Fr'edk. Vincent said he saw a man-whom he thought was McKeown take a box from the front of Moore's shop, and then saw the three accused and two others run down the lane.—At this stage the Court adjourned till 2.30 p.m. .
