A.R.C. SPRING MEETING.

The Spring Meeting of the Auckland pacing Club commenced on Saturday last t Ellerslie. Consequent on the wet morn,V the attendance of the public was not larU, and at most there could not have teen'more than three thousand persons resent- A strong wind blew across the course, and altogether it was not a model c in<r clay. The incessant rain of late wAne racing track heavy, consequently n o fast times were put up. The totalisators were worked by Messrs H H. Hayr and Co., and not a single complaint was heard during the day. The new firm introduced a number of innovations, !yliich were all appreciated. One of the machines used in the paddock was a beautifully finished 20-horse, made in Christchurch. Despite the attendance there was plenty of money on the course f or speculation, the large sum of £5,393 lein"passed through the machines. Major Banks was in his old position as judge, and aye Ms decisions promptly. c The programme Of races was a long one and the horses in the first event were not despatched until about 1.20. There was a lso a long delay at the start for the Guineas, and the meeting was not got over up to announced time. Nothing occurred in the running to mar the harmony of the racing and there were fortunately no accidents?* However when the horses were assembled at the start for the Guineas ij "Waldron, the rider of Miss 4nna got kicked on one of his le^s liy "Doneraile, and this necessitated him dismounting. Eventually Waldron acain got in the saddle and rode his mount in the race, but only under great pain. The fields in the various races were large and the majority exciting, thanks to ,Mr Evett's handicapping. Of the thirteen runners for the President's Handicap, Swordfish and Cuiralba were the fancied ones, the winner turning up in the Papajnira trained horse. Seven went to the post to dispute possession of the Guineas. Each of the r turners had more or less following, but Coronet earned the bulk of the money. After a furlong had been covered, the favourite went to the front, and running along the top stretch he had such an advantage that at this point it looked as if lie had the race iron. He came into the straight in advance of St. Crispin, but when the lawn rails were reached, the last named drew level and fighting it out in a game manner, he won an exciting race by a neck. The win was veil received. Miss Emmy was prominent in the run across the top stretch only and Favona failed to get on his legs until about three furlongs had been covered. St. Crispin is owned by Mr D. Stewart of the Thames, and he also claims the honour of having bred the colt privately. However, he was nurtured in his early days by his trainer, Mr F. McManemin, who thus led in his first Guineas winner. St. Crispin vas handled in an artistic manner by W. Smith. St. Crispin is by St. Leger—Tin-t-ara by Nordenfeldt —Ties Deuce. Thirteen juveniles competed for the Musket Stakes, which Hylas (by St. Hippo —Cantiniere) won from end to end. The start was not a good one and Hermosa had her head turned the wrong way. The winner is owned by a well - known mining man and was trained by Mr J. C. Booth. Messrs Nathan 'claim the honour of breeding Hylas, who promises to develop into a good colt. ' They also own and bred Explosion, who ran second. The winner cost 55 guineas as a yearling, being knocked down to Mr J. G. Baton. Mr F. McManemin's Tim was made iivonrite for the Hurdle Race, and he sewed a two lengths win from-Nor'-west, Si Crispin was again pulled out for the Short's Handicap, and he got home in advance oi St. Elmo, while St. Kilda, the iavourite, could only get fourth. For the City Handicap, St. Gordon was made a strong favourite, it being stated that he had accomplished a big gallop at EUerslie. However, Fabulist proved equal to the occasion, winning from the outsider Porange Potae, while the favourite finished in the ruck. Mrs Lennard's win with fabulist proved very popular. Napoleon had no difficulty in winning the Pony Handicap, while the veteran St. Clements once more made his appearance after a lengthy retirement and won the Flying Handicap with the thumping impost of lOst in the saddle. Details of the racing are appended:—
