THE ENGINEERS' STRIKE.

SUGGESTION BY THE BOARD

OF TRADE. ,;'

LONDON, October 22.

The Board of Trade has forwarded letters to the Employers' Federation, the Engineering Association, and the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, in which the attention of these organisations is directed to the lamentable results accruing to the employers, the employees, and the country by the strike. The Board suggests, as the basis of a conference, that the employers should disavow any intention to interfere with the legitimate action of the trades unions, while not admitting interference in the management of their business : the trades union on their side to maintain the right of combination, but to disavow interference with the management, and to withdraw the demand for 48 hours, leaving the united conference to settle the hours of work.

LONDON. October 22

The officials of the Engineers Association promised respectful consideration of Mr Ritche's proposal for settlement of the strike. The officials of the Employers Federation consider such intervention unnecessary.
