COUNTRY NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

TOKATOKA.

The winter has gone and the roads are drying up. There is a movement on foot to resuscitate the Band of Hope concerts, and a meeting is announced for 2nd prox. to elect officers and transact other necessary business. We had a visit lately from Mr Robt. Thompson, member for Marsden, He came up to view Government Avorks in Tokatoka Swamp before leaving Auckland for Wellington. If the works prove adequate for the proper drainage of the swamp, there is not the slightest doubt of what good the present Government has done in reclaiming such valuable land. Those who are able to judge say that it contains some of the best land in the North Island, and predict a prosperous future for the settlement. Our steamship company has again changed hands, as Messrs Mitchelson and Jagger have bought it up. It is to be hoped that these gentlemen will endeavour to make the service suit the Wairoa people better. Complaints are made about the freights and fares. It is time something was done in reducing them.
