CHAMBER OF MINES.
At the meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Mines yesterday afternoon, Mr H. Brett presiding, Mr James Russell raised the question of the withholding of information from colonial shareholders in connection with mines which were owned chiefly by foreign capital. He though £ that the same information given to shareholders in London should be published in Auckland. He suggested that ne-ws from the mines sent to London should be published here also, and that Auckland shareholders should be placed on exactly the same footing as to what was going on in the mine as the English shareholders. Mr Gorrie and Mr Bloomfield spoke to similar effect, the latter suggesting that some legislation was necessary. Mr L. D. Nathan wrote on this subject, complaining of the difficulty experienced by local shareholders in British and foreign goldmining companies in getting information as to what was also going on in the mines. He also thought that shareholders should have the right of inspecting the mines. He thought something should be clone to ameliorate the position of local shareholders in companies formed with foreign capital. The President said he thought that if the local representatives of British and foreign companies sent a report of the work in the mines to the Auckland newspapers say a week or so after the mail reached London this would be satisfactory to the local shareholders. After some '■•-(her discussion, it was resolved on tion of Mr Bloomfield to refer t' to the Legal and Finance Co. .o take such steps as might be dee_. .oessary.
