THE MILITARY CONTINGENT.
RECEPTION AT WAIRARAPA,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
Wellington, this day. The New Zealand Military Contingent, at the invitation of the natives of Greytown, went to Wairarapa yesterday and were entertained at the Maori village of Papiawa. Mrs and Miss Seddon, Hon. J. Carroll, the Mayors of Petone and PaJmerston were among the visitors. The Mayor of Greytown and Mr Buchanan, M.H.R., welcomed the visitors. The Hon.MrCarrollalso spoke, and said there was no prouder man in the colony at the present moment than himself. The performance of the contingent had redounded to the credit of the colony and themselves. They had acted as gentlemen and Rangitiras, and now practically had come to a point whence their dispersal would take place. Colonel Pitt and Captain Tunuiraiigi returned thanks, the latter saying a draft of the two races had taken place, and he was going to agitate for the formation of native volunteer corps throughout the colony. The day was then spent in feasting, dancing and cheering.
