ERNEST CAVILL DEFEATED BY NUTTALL.

LONDON, September 9

The swimming match between N uttall and Ernest Cavill for the championship of the world and £500 a side was swum at Doncaster. The contest was witnessed by a great crowd. Nuttall forged ahead from the start, and at 300 yards, where .Nuttall was leading by 25 yards, the Australian gave up, Nuttall finishing easily, and beating the record for-the distance. Nuttall won the toss ,and selected the right hand side of jlhe baths. He was the quickest away, and when ..0 yards had been covered he led Cavill by 2 yrads. By the time the fourth length of the. baths had been negotiated Nuttall had increased his advantage six lengths, aud kept, steadily increasing until Cavill retired.

Prior to the race the betting was G to 4 on Nuttall.

Tyers and Percy Cavill have arranged to swim a mile between the piers at Blackpool on the 18th; five quarter miles at Blackpool on the "2nd instant; a half mile in the lake at Manchester or Hollingsworth before the ..oth inst.
