THE TAILORESSES' LOG.
We understand that, after many meetings and prolonged consideration, the Executive of the Tailoresses' Union have drawn up a log which will be submitted to the Union at a meeting to-night. Great credit is due to the Hon. W. Jennings, President of tho Union, and Mrs S. R. Hcndre, Secretary, for the time and care bestowed upon this complicated and delicate, subject. They have procured information from every available quarter, and have considered every item in its bearing on tho worker, the manufacturer, and the industry. The work has been beset by great difficulties, for in connection with many lines the competition is of such a nature that an excessive price would destroy the manufacture of those articles in the Auckland factories. A reference to what has lately happened in Melbourne in the same trade snows how easily mistakes may be made, for there **** log drawn up by the Board appointed under the Victorian statute to suppress sweating has just been unanimously rejected by the manufacturers, and is now the subject of fierce contention. We are informed that the executive of the Auckland Union have wisely agreed that a moderate scale is best for the entire trade. We feel sure that the Union will do well in endorsing this policy. The earnest consideration which the subject has received from the executive and the devotion which they have shown to the interests of the union afford the best of reasons why their lead in the matter should be cordially supported by the whole of the members.
