BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.
NEWTON.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night, there being in attendance His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Shackelford), and Crs. Wilson, Warnock, Sexton, Ambury, Donald, Stewart. Salisbuey-street.—Mr C. R. Deberg wrote drawing attention to the state of Salisbury-street.—lt was agreed to send to Mr Deberg a copy of the report of the Streets Committee dealing with work done in the street.
Repoet.—The Foreman of Works' report stated thafc good progress had been made with the drainage of Leighton-street and Rose Road. Bridge Road had been repaired in the worst places. Cr. Wilsox.—The Mayor said ifc would be the last time Cr. Wilson would he with them. He referred to the efficient way he had served the borough during his three years of office. —Cr. Wilson acknowledged the compliment paid him. Accouxts. — General accounts to the amount of £63 16s 3d were passed for payment, and also £98 5s lOd water account.
PARNELL. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last evening in the Borough Council Chambers, there being present the Mayor (Mr Thornes), Mrs Matson, Messrs Briggs, Page, Fitt, Wright, Cozens, Tewsley Connell, and Thomas.
New Member.—Mr Tewsley, elected in place of Cr. Hudson, took his seat and was welcomed by the Mayor. Cr. Tewsley was elected a member of the Legal and Finance Committee.
Legal and Finaxce Committee.—The Legal and Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £99 3s Id be paid, and that the quarterly water account of £230 19s be paid. It was resolved to obtain a meter to check the City Council's meter, a.s the difference between this quarter's account and the corresponding quarter's account of last year was so great. It was also resolved to hold the paying of the account over till the City Council had been communicated with re the increase in the account.
Foeemax of Works' Report.—The Foreman of Works reported that in Portland Road the drains were partly collapsed. He recommended that a man be sent into the drains to clean them out.—lt was resolved that the work he done.
Deaixs.—A long discussion was held on the manner in which the drains had been laid, and ifc was eventually decided to allow the matter to remain in abeyance till next meeting, the councillors in the meantime to peruse the specifications of the contract. The Inspector of Nuisances wrote statins that a drain in Railway-street was defective, and a nuisance so caused. It was resolved that the agent be required to put the drain in order to the satisfaction of the Inspector of Nuisances. Water Rate.—The Legal and Finance Committee reported that a large number of consumers had not paid their water rate. It was resolved to cut off all who do nofc immediately pay their rates.
