CRIMINAL SITTINGS
(Before His Honor Mr Justice Conoliy). Inflicting Grievous Bodily Harm.— ! Thomas Tinley, a man of low stature was | indicted that on Sth June last, at Auck i land, he did assault Laurence Donald, so as'to cause him actual bodily harm.--, i Prisoner pleaded not guilty, and in anwm j to His Honor said that he had no counsel He said that he hoped His Honor wookP watch the case on his behalf, as. ne had no education to do so hue —The prisoner exercised the right ot cliai lenge when the jury was being empan-nelFed.-Witnesses, at request of pusonei, | were ordered to leave the Court. - ■Mr Tole opened the case tor tne ■■ Crown. -Mr Donald, the prosecutor, i deposed that be kept a restaurant along j ! with Mr Gilbert at the foot ot < f^™; ! ! On the night of the llth J>>ne last a little ; I after 11 o'clock prisoner with four other I men and two girls came into the shop and ! called for suppers. One of the company ! tendered 3s Od in payment to witness b| i partner, who said it was not enough, that, ; he wanted 7s Gd, one shilling each, and , suggested each should pay. Witness said i She could see there was jjoing to be aj ! row and he ordered them all out j land shut the door. Prisoner burst i I the door open lock and all. Witness 1 ! could see the prisoner from inside the; I window. Prisoner walked up towards 1 Queen-street and witness followed, keeping i him in si-dtt. When witness got to tne corner of Uiggins' hoot shop ho heard ' prisoner running and he ran after lam. i Near some stable gates lie saw prisoner ; standing. Witness wont to him and stood some ten yards distant and said, " \ ou need nofc try to get away old man."—Prisoner ■ then made a rush at witness and stabbed : him in the groin. Witness thought prisoner stabbed him with something in the shape of a dessert knife. The night was ; 'quite dark and it was difficult to sec, ■ Witness brought a stick down on i prisoner's head after he was stabbed. ! but it had no effect. Prisoner ■was arrested by Constable McNealhe.— ! Dr. Hooper aud Constable McNeely also I gave evidence. — Prisoner denied the of- ! fence, and called William Dent, and Henry j Gilbert, who gave evidence on bis behalf. ! —The jury 'found the prisoner guilty, I without retiring, and lie was sentenced to two years', with hard labour.—His Honor said'he would always be severe with ■ persons who used I .'he knife. , TIIIiFT OF lvAt;i;i Loos.--John De Vere : was indicted lhu.t on lOth of -June last at I Puru, near Thames, he stole two kauri j logs, the property of Frederick Jackson, j —The particulars'of the case were published in last evenings impression.— i After forty minutes deliberation I he jury ; returned a verdict of guilty.—His Honor imposed a sentence of four months' imprisonment with hard labour, and ordered that the prisoner pay .ClO compensation io ! Mr Jackson, tho prosecutor, and £50 costs ■ of prosecution.
