THIS DAY.
Theft.—A man named Harry Gregorson, who had been found guilty yesterday of the theft of a swag, was brought up for sentence.—Detective Maddern, of Christchurch, deposed that Gregerson had been tried at Christchurch for house-breaking, but was acquitted. — Prisoner was sentenced to six months' imprisonment) with hard | labour. Charges against Maoris,—Thrao young Maoii men, named Ngnpeka te Whato, Eru te Whata, and William te Whata, were brought up in connection with charges of house-breaking and stealing ab Otaua, in the Hokianga district. Ngapeka waa charged with receiving a quantity of stolen goods, and the other two with receiving o quantity a store goods, including a bridle, a clock, three axes, lookingglass, & ready reckoner, etc., the property of A. H. Morrison, storekeeper, of Otaua. — Mr J. A. Tole appeared for the prosecution and Mr Blomfield for the defence.—The prisoners pleaded not guilty.— Evidence j was given as to the loss of the goods by A. H. Morrison, and aa fco the recovery of certain stolen goods at the residence of the prisoners by William Forbes, manager for Mr Morrison ab Kirikiri. Some of these goods had been stolen from the Kirikiri store and other goods from Otaua. Ngapeka's name was found written in a book, a ready reckoner, when it was recovered. A number of native witnesses were also examined. Evidence was being given regarding tbe alleged offences when we went to press this afternoon.
