CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland City Council waa held lasb evening, when there were present the Mayor, Mr P. Dignan (in the chair), and Crs. Jamieson, Warren, J. Trenwibh, R. Farrell, A. Glover, J. T. Julian, C. Grey, A. Kidd, A. Cairns, C. Hesketh, D. McNab, Becroffc, J. Stichbury, W. J. Courtney, \Y. B. White, Hewson, and Pabterson.

Presentation. —Mr.lsidore Alexander wrote offering lo presenbto the Art Gallery the historical picture recently on exhibition ab Wildman aud Lyell'e, representing Queen Victoria and the Royal Family leaving Kingstown Harbour in 1849. —The oiler was accepted with thanks.

Permits. —A number of building permits were dealt wibh. Mr H. N. Abbott wrote submitting plans of his proposed alterations to the Opera House, and asked that permit be granted so as to enable bhe work to be done during the present alack season. —The intention was to erecb a mansard roof over the stage to allow the lifting of tho cloths entirely.—Referred to the Streets Committee.

The Jpbilkk.—The Mayor gaid he wished bo make a brief remark concerning the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations which had been so successfully brought to a conclusion. He desired to notify bhe fact bhab he waa very pleased with the w»y in which everything connected with the regulation of matters during the celebration period had beea carried out by the officers of the various departments, and he returned his sincere thanks to everyone for their assistance. Finance Committee.—Thiß Commibtoa reported :—" 1. lie memo, from Engineer leporting discharge of 14 tarring and sanding men, retained for workg, Queen-street: Your Committee submits memo, to Council. 2. Be works referred re ways and means : Your Committee reports that at prebOfcb there are no funds available, and the eeasun being unsuitable has deferred consideration for one month."—The report waa adopted.
