A JUBILEE DINNER.
A most successful function took place at the Choral Hall lasb evening, the occasion being a dinner given by the directors of tha Auckland Gas Company, to their employees and wives. Mr J. H. Upton, chairman of directors, presided, and nearly 400 persons Rat down to dinner, amoug them being Professor Brown, and Messrs T. Peacock and Ching, directors. In the course of his speech, the Chairman said that the gathering was the first of its kind in the history of the Company. It showed the good feeling that existed between the Company and ita men, and he hoped ib would not be the laat they would have. Mr E. B. Parsons, the Secretary, after congratulating the meeting on the presence of the directors, gave some interesting particulars about the early days of the Company, showing the wonderful advance that had been made since its formation 35 years ago. In 1867 they had 325 consumers, which was jusb the number that they had put on their list during the paab ten months. Nowadays they hardly had time to pub in the material and fill it up. Mr Chenery Suggate. bhe Company's new engineer, also spoke, expressing the opinion that gas would be the light of the future, jusb as ib was the light of the present. During bhe evening musical items were rendered by Messrs Mason, Dunn, Ashbon, Hookey, Haydon, Schatz, Hill, Bush, Cole, Hood, Gutry, McCarthney, Turner, McDermott, Ewan and the Italian String Band. The catering was done by Mr T. McEwin in a manner that reflected greab credib on hia establishment, and Mr J. A. Pike's artistic decorations were greatly admired.
