THE COLONIAL PREMIERS.
CONFERENCE WITH MR CHAMBERLAIN.
PREFERENTIAL TRADE, PACIFIC CABLE AND NAVAL DEFENCE.
■ London, June SO. The Conference between Mr Cbamberlain and the Premiers was resumed to-day.
Mr Chamberlain raised the question of preferential trade in general terms, 2nd the Premiers having discussed the matter at a private meeting decided that it was impossible to submit definite proposals in the absence of information. They urged Mr Chamberlain to appoint a Commission.
The Conference then discussed the Pacific Cable question, but an agreement on the subject is doubtful. Both Mr Kingston and Sir John Forrest oppose the scheme, while" the others showed indifference.
At a private meeting ihe Premiers agreed to renew the contributions to the Auxiliary Squadron, but considered it premature to expect larger contributions to naval defence.
