CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the City Schools Committee was held last evening. Preaenb :—Messrs J. Blades (Chairman), It. Farrell, Flicker, Squirrell, Fairs, Adoma and Dr. King. ScAßcrrr of Male Teachers.—A letter was read from Mr Carter, headmaster of the Napier-sbreeb School, complaining1 that owing to insufficiency of male teachers the duty of supervising the boys' playground ab proeenb devolved on the female pupil teachers, which was an objectionable arrangement. He thought there should be at least three male pupil teachers available for this duty, in conjunction with the two male atsiebants.—lt was decided to draw the attention of the Board of Education to the letter. — Mr Farrell said he felt strongly in this matter. Unless the Board were prepared to give greater encouragement to young fellows to remain in its employ, there would in time be no male teachers left. He moved, " That) in the opinion of this Committee the Board should offer greater inducements to young men to enter and remain in the profession of teaching." This was seconded by Mr Fairs, and carried unanimously. The Coming Jubilee. —On the motion of Mr Farrell it was reeolved that the Chairman be requested to convene a meeting of Chairmen of Committees and the headmasters of the city and suburban schools, to arrange for united action re the proposed procession of children on June 22nd, and other matters in connection therewith. Mr Farrell considered bhat the girls of the IV., V., and VI. Standards should assemble with their teachers at the rendezvous on the day in question, nob marching in the procession with the boys, but simply to join in singing the National Anthem, Miscellaneous —In accordance with a request received, from Mr W. H. Draffin, it was resolved that the Board be requested to facilitate the removal of Mr Draffin to the Chapel-streeb School,, and to make arrangements for filling his place as first assisbanb at Wellesleystreet School. The appointment of Miss E. M. Chapman co succeed Mies Angove (resigned) ab Napierstreet School was approved, Notice of'-Motion. —Mr Blades gave notice of his intention to move, ab next meeting, "That the.Board of Education be respectfully asked to appoint to one or more schools in this Committee's districb four or more duly-qualified teachers over the number allowed by scale, so that they might be senb where required as relieving or substitute teachers."
