Drunkenness.—Norah Williams was fined 20s, er in default four days' imprisonment, for drunkenness, bhis being her bhird offence within six monbhs. — Another prisoner arresbed for drunkenness was said to be suffering from violenb delirium tremens, and was remanded for eight days. Alleged Theft.—John Smibh waa remanded till tomorrow morning on a charge of having stolen bwo tins of jam, valued at Bd, the property of some person unknown. Charge of Desertion:—A young man named Arthur E. James was charged on remand wibh having deserbed his two children ab Hobarbin 1895, and was further remanded till Friday, when, it was stated by Sergeant Clarke, a police officer .would bo here from Tasmania to take charge of bhe accused. Larceny.—Horberb Smith appeared on remand on a charge of having stolon goods to the value of £4 7s.—The report of the Probation Officer was not favourable to the accused being admitted to probation.— Smith waa sentenced to two' months' iuiprisonmenb with hard labour. Truants.—William Wills, charged wibh having failed to eend hia son to a public school, and thereby committing a breach of bhe School Abtendance Act, was fined Bs, being 2a for every week the boy waa absent. Joeeph Hodgson waa fined 10s, being 2s a week for five weeks, for neglecting to send his eon bo the Parnell school. George Grey waa fined 8a for a similar offence. James Clemenbs waa fined 20s for failing bo eend his two children to school regularly. A similar charge againsb Wm. Brown waa withdrawn, as was aleo a case against Percy Babhursb. Maria Gallagher was fined 8s on accounb of a truanb child. Moss De Jongh was fined 10s, and Frank Dyer 14s, for similar offences. Theft.—An old man named William Hoggard was charged wibh stealing an oil drum containing lighthouse oil, valued ab 15b, the property of Samuel Fullerbon. The evidence showed that bhe accused picked up the drum and took ib to Charles Bates, marine store dealer, in Freeman's Bay, who gave him sixpence for it. Bates said in evidence tbat he would nob have boughb the drum from Hoggard if he had known thab ib belonged bo anobher person. Hoggard bold him bhab he found the drum on the rubbish heap. The owner of the drum stated thab he left ib in the localiby for only a few minutes. Hoggard eaid he bhought ib was full of water.—The Bench convicbed bho accused, bub as nothing else was known againsb him he was ordered bo come up for judgmonb when called on. His Worship Eaid he considered the receiver was more to blame than the accus-ed. Youthful Offenders.—Two amall boya named George Graydon and Owen Dyer were charged with breaking and entering the dwelling - house of Charles Wright, in Grafton Road, and stealing therefrom, bub a3 no evidence was offered bhey were discharged.—The two boye, however, pleaded guilty to stealing goods valued at £10 12s. and bhe Bench deferred decision as to wbab would be done with bhem. Theft.—John Watson pieaded guilby bo sbealing gocd3 valued at £4 19s, bhe property of A. B. Roberton, and was remanded in order to geb a report'from bhe Probation Officer as to whebher it would be desirable to admit him to probabion under bhe Firsb Offenders Acb. An Indictable Charge.—A young man named -George Flureo was charged on remand with receiving a gold watch valued ab £7, tbe property cf Charles Wright, knowing the same to be stolen. He was further charged wibh having on January sth broken into bhe shop of Jamos Moyes, iv Victoria-Bbreer, and having stolen bhorefrom goods valued ab £18 53.—The accused pleaded nob guilby.—Evidence was being taken as we went to press.
