It. was also decided bo issue licenses for grazing on tne reserves belonging to bhe Board, such licenses only bo be transferable to ratepayers. In making bho presentation Brother Shaldrick pointed out thab Brother Kelaall had held the. office of Treasurer (wibh bhe exception of a shorb period when he acted aB Chief Ranger) ever since tho formation of the Courb in 1875, and it was as a Blight boken of their high appreciation of his services thab bhov wero making him this present. Brother Kelsall, in reburning thanks, referred with satisfaction bo bho growbh of bhe society, which had increased in numbers during the past 22 years from ,12 bo 120 members, and now held property valued at over £800. As an evidence of the popularity of the journal we may mention bhab for weeks pasb each issue has been sold oat almost immediately afbor publication, and ib has nob been possible to meeb bhe demand for copies. There was a Very large abtendance of members ab the quarterly meeting of the Auckland Lodge of Druids last evening, Vice-Arch Bro, Haywood presiding. A large amount of business waa transacted, including the election of a D.P. After the initiation of candidates, Past Districb Grand President Bro. W. T. Jennings stated that he had on Friday evening last opened a new Lodge ab Waihi, and installed bhe officers. The Lodge would be known as bhe Prido of Waihi, and was sbarted under favourable circumstances, great enbhusiasm being shown by the new members. Circulars and bills were received giving full particulars of the Druids' gala, bo bo held at tho exhibition buildings, Melbourne, on Eaaber Monday. The principal events are the Druids' Greab Cycling Race, the firsb prize being £125. and trie Band contesb, the prizes being £200. In connection with the bazaar, the firsb prize in bhe raffle is a golden Druid weighing 2330zs lodwts, 22 carab gold, certified bo by bhe Royal Mint, Melbourne. The valuo of bhe golden Druid is £1,000. Ticko'.a may be obtained from any members of thß Druidic order in Auckland. Last evening the anniversary soiree of tho Ponsonby Baptist Sunday-school was held, bhe attendance being a large one. After tho tea, which was served in the schoolroom, th'a public meeting was held in the church, the Rev. A. H. Collins presiding. Mr A. G. Jones, Secretary, road the annual report which showed thab bhere were 210 scholars and 23 officers and teachers on bho roll of bhe Sunday School; and bho Chrisbian Endeavour Society numbered 42 active, 2 associate and 41 honorary members. Tho Western Springs branch school under the superintendance of Mr J. S. Bigelow had four teachers and fifty scholars, and they hoped soon to be able to purchase somo land and erect a schoolroom. Mr Doarsley, the Treasurer, road the statement of accounts, which showedthe receipts to bo £122 10s lOid and expenditure £121 10s 8&d. Theeollections^of the anniversary services ware £15. Addresses were given by the Revs. J. F. Jones and Wolfender, Messrs Bigelow and R. B. Heriob. Miss Fear sang a sacred solo and Mr Abel also contributed two Bacred songß. Mrs H. May played bhe accompaniments. Votes of thanks wero accorded to all who had assisted in the anniversary. The few members of the second battalion of H.M. 18th Royal Irish still resident in Auckland will no doubb to-day be reminding their friends bhab bhis is the 33rd anniversary of the attack upon tbe Orakau Pa, near Kihikihi. in the Waikato. The storming party consisted of the second battalion ot the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, and was led by Captain Ring, w bo was morbally wounded. Orakau was bhe last stronghold of the Maoris during bhe war,and bhe natives as usual fought bravely, and when bhe general senb an interpreter bo ask bhe chiefs bo surrender as bhe position was then already sapped, the reply received was •• no, never I" men, women, and children joining in the chorus of " Ake, Ake, Ake." The Pa was captured on bhe 2nd oi April. 1864, afber a mosb stubborn resistance, in which many were killed on each aide. Over 100 Maoris were buried in one grave alone, while the attacking parby lost 54 killed and wounded, amongsb whom were Captain Hereford of bhe Militia. Capbain Ring died of his wounds on the day the Pa was capbured. The late Rewf Manga'Mania-" pobo was one of the chiefs who so bravely defended the last stronghold of the Maoris.
