HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was hold yesterday afternoon, Mr Stichbury presiding. Mr J. JVfcCabo took his seat as member for the Parnell and Newmarket boroughs. Contributions.—The Secretary reported tha& the North Auckland Bourd had forwarded £478 odd in part paymenb of contribution. Tho Bay of Plenty was reported to bo in arroar with the payment of- tho contribution towards the maintontenance of i\ Costley Home inmate, and it was decided to place tho matter in the hands of tho Board's solicitors.
Finance.—The annual statement of accounts &howod that the expenditure was £25,197 12d 3d. Tho Drincipal items were: Hospital, £10,931 ss"id j Coatloy Home, £3,222 15s; charitable aid, £6,381 15s; office, £444 lls 3d. Tbe receipts were lees by £331 os lid, which amount was shown a» being overdrawn. Tho assets on March 24 were set down at £1,770 14a Id, and tho liabilities ab £2,059 2a 7d. The Btatomenb of estimated income and expenditure for 1897 - 8 was as follows: —; Estimated income : Hospital fees, general, £2,200 ; due by North Auckland, £600; miscellaneous, £50; Cosbley Home, fees, etc., £500; garden, £350; interesb Costley bequesta, £482 6b ; charitable aid foQg, £250 ; ondowmanb rents, £250 : total, £4,682 3s. Added to tho assets this umounb gives a total of £6,452 17a Id. Estimated expenditure: Hospital maintenance, £8,8*25; Cosbley Home ditto, £2,800: garden, £300; charitable aid, £5,000; office, £450; interesb and miscellaneous, £100: total, £18,075. Added to the liabilities this giroa a total of £20,134 2a 7d. Tho balance required would bo £13,681 5a 6J. Lasb year's contributions and subsidies amounted to £13,239 lie 2d. It waa thought tho rate then levied would b« high enough for fc'ie coming term. The accounts ivere adopted and will come oh for discussion at next mooting;.
Hospital,— Dr. Baldwin reported that there wero at dale 89 mule and 42 female patients in tho Hospital. Ten caees of typhoid had been admitted during the past fortnight, makintr the number of cases under treatment 37.
JNurses' Hours.—On the motion of Mr Gordon ie was resolved : " Thab the medical superintendent be requested to furnish a roporb as to the practicability .of ro-organ-ising the nursing Bbaff, with the view of shortening tho hours of attendance of the nurses in the wards ; tho method euch a change would bo worked under; the scheme to show tho probable cosb of such a change as compared with the cosb of bhe present avstem in the several grades ; and to embodying the independent opinion of the matron ns to the desirabi ity of such a change on bhe lines above indicated."
