WAIKATO NOTES.

Hamilton, Friday,
A msetine of the Waikato Horticultural Show Committee was held in the Commercial Hotel this evening. The Secretary was instructed to writo to the Department cf Agriculture, recommending Mr W. Johns as delegate to represent this branch of the Waikato Fruitgrowers Association at the Conference to be held in Brisbane in June next. Dr. Brewia' name was added to tbe Committee, and a lengthy prize schedule then prepared. During tbe last few months a Hamilton resident has noticed one of his cows tailing rapidly and pining away. A day or two ago she died, and in order to discover If possible the cause of death, he held a post mortem when ib was found that tbe animal had ab some time or another swallowed a lady's hat pin. about six inches in length. The pin had penetrated the lungs and also for aboub an inch into the heart, in which it had formed a sorb of abscess. The pin was thickly coated with rust. -;
Mr M. McSwe'eney, an old Hamilton boy, has just returned after a two and ahalf years' stay in Coolgardie. He states that when nob prospecting "on his own " he had no difficulty in obtaining work, the wages ranging from £3 10s to £4 10s wibh water supplied. He speaks highly of the mineral wealth of tho country. He brought wibh him a most interesbing collection of specimens, including heavy gold-bearing quartz, asbestos, mica, felspar, quartzite, etc. He did nob relish the idea of spending another Eummer in Western Australia, so has made up his mind to give the Maoriland goldfields a trial.
Several dwelling houses in Hamilton East bnd a narrow escape from destruction by fire yesterday owing to someone setting fire to the furze on the adjoining allotment). Ib ia only a few days ago since a houße in this same neighbourhood waa deetroyed from the same causa.
Noaf.ua wahia, Friday. On Wednesday week a aeries of trial boat races will be held on the Waipa.
The business people here have changed the weekly half-holiday from Thursday to Wednesday, a8 the latter is a much more convenient; day.
Raglan, January 25.
At a meeting of the Raglan District School Committee, held on the 23rd inst, Mr F. B. Sewell, who is leaving this district, resigned hia position as chairman, and Mr W. J. Henry was unanimously elected chairman for the remainder of the term. On Sunday evening, at tbe close of the service in tbe Congregational Church, Mrs Sewell, organist, waa presented with a handsome silver watch and chain.
Rev. C. A. Lyon made the presentation and spoke very highly of the manner in which Mrs Sewell had fulfilled the duties of organist aud the good work done by Mr Sewell as a member of the Church Committee. Mr La Trobe, as representing the Anglican Church here, also spoke of the services rendered by Mrs Sewell to the Church of England, and Mr T, B. Hill, ss representing the general public, referred to the help rendered by Mrs Sewell in all social functions, the whole congregation wishing them health and prosperity in their new sphere. Mrs Sewell haa been organist for both churches for several years.
