Sibxey, this day, ijj consequence of information received from the New Zealand police, a bright look-out has been kept here for the man Thomas Carroll, charged with having thrown vitriol over Robert Jewell at Paeroa on the 20th inst. j £ va s supposed that he might have eluded the police between Auckland m _ Wellington and gone on to Sydney by the Union Company's s.s. Mararoa en the 23rd inst. This proved to be a correct surmise. On arrival of the Mararoa from Wellington direct last night, Detectives Jones and Fullerton proceeded on jjoard, and as the result of inquiries idenrHied one of the passengers ac Thomas Carroll, and charged him with throwing vitriol at Paeroa. The clothes worn by Carroll did not correspond with those described as worn by him when last seen in New Zealand, but it transpired that during the voyage he had changed clothes with another man, and also took his name for a small monetary consideration.
Carroll at first denied his identity, tat when confronted with the evidence is possession of the detectives admitted that he was the man for whom the warrant had been issued. The accused subsequently admitted that he threw vitriol at Paeroa, but alleged that he did so because Jewell drew a revolver.
