MASONIC NEWS.
The Supremo Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Zealand held its annual convocation lasb evening in the Freemasons' Hall, Princos-atreet. There was a large attendance, amongst the visitors being Bro. H. J. Williams, Giaod Scribe E., from Wellington, and Bro. J. Wansbrough, from Oamaru. Nearly all tbe chapters in the colony were repiesented. Bro. G. H. Powley, F.G.P... presided, being supported by Bro. Rev. T. Porritb, S.G.P., and Bro. A. Kidd, T.O.P. Accounts. — The balance-sheet showed the receipbs for bbc past year as being £156 Is 7d, and tho disbursements le»s by the sum of £74 7s lOd. The excess of assets over liabilities was set down at £109 3a 7d. Officii-9 were appointed as follows :— The rank of P. E.G. was conferred on Companion H. J. Williams, and Companion Dr. L. G. Boor was elected representative for the Grand Chapter of Victoria. Grand rfficers were elected as under :—G.P.Z., George H. Powiey, Auckland ; Depute G.Z., Rev. Thomas Porritb, Wairarapa ; Principal, J. M. Brown, Oamaru ; Principal, J. J. M; Hamilton, Chrisbchurch; Grand Scribe E., H. J.Wißiams, Wellington ; Scribe N., T. G. Smith, Lyttelton ; Treasurer, D. Greig, Wellington ; Recorder, R. C. Hamerbon, Wellington ; Chancellor, J. Wansbrough. Oamaru ; Sojourner. J. A. Kirby, Dunedin: Sojourner, H. Dempeey. Now Plymouth: Sojourner, W. Dawick, Palmorston North ; Superintendent of Works, W. Smith, Itrvercargill ; Standard-bearer, P. L. Hall, Nelson ; Janitor, J. D. Webster, Auckland. Standing Committee : The officers of Grand Chapter, ex officio, and Comp_ J. Jack, and G. Wilson, P.Za.; R. Fletcher, Z. ; George France, H. Ab tho close of the convocation the brethren adjourned to the banquet hall, where an hour or two was spent in a social way. Mr Stillwell, of Parnell, fulfilled the duty of caterer in a manner that gave every satisfaction.
A piece of Australian blue gum 2^in across by l£in through was on view 80-day ab Messrs King's, the chemists, establishment, Queen-street. ' Its history is peculiar. Mr W. Bowman's mare was suffering from what was evidently an internal trouble and the services of Mr W. Rosser, veterinary surgeon, were called in. That gentleman treated bhe animal for ten days with bhe result that bhe piece of wood referred to was successfully removed from the animal. Ib is not known under what circumstances such an indigestible morsel was swallowed.
