MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
The Auckland Shorthand Writers' Association held its ninth annual meeting on Jan. 13 in Sb. George's Hall. The reports of the Secretary and Treasurer showed the Association to be in a sound financial condition, the accession of new members having been very great during the year. The following were elected a. officer* for the ensuing six months :—President, Mr J. B. Upton ; Vice-presidents, Messrs A. U. Jarrebt, A. W. Kitson and Rev. W. E. Gillam : Secretary, Mr H. T. Maclean ; Treasurer, Mr W, H. Leece ; Librarian, Miss E. G. Davis; Reporter, Mr F. W, Luhning ; Committee. Messrs E. V. Slyheld. C. Abbott, and Mißs H. Smith.
On Sabnrday, Dec. 26th, a distressing bathing fatality occurred at Tamaki, when Mr Frederick Stainton, of Norman-street. Mount Roski.l,. waa accidentally drowned in the river. It appears that Mr Stainton was spending the d%y with bis wife and some friends ab the farm of lit -Thompson ab Tamaki. Aboub four o'cldcik: in the afternoon, he went down to the river with hia litble boy and another lad, and stripping off his clothes wenb in for a swim. Mr Stainton was only 32 years of age, and had been for twenty years in the employ of Messrs E. Porter and Go., ironmongers. , Ho was secretary of the Mount Eden Baptist Sunday-school, and a prominenb member of that church. He leaves a wife and a young family to mourn bis loss.
