INCREASE IN THE RAILWAY REVENUE.
General satisfaction will be caused by the announcement thab there has been & large increase in the railway revenue. The approximate revenuo for the four weeks ending 2nd ot January was £123,473, as compared with £107,616 for the corresponding period of last year. This increase of £15,857 for the month is mainiy attributable to tbe popularity of the Hon. Mr (.adman's uniform holiday fares of twopence a mile first-class and a penny second-class (return) on all railways throughout bhe colony. The revenue for the firsb nine months ot bhe current financial year also exhibits the large increase of £53,423 upon the roturns for tbe coreesponding period of 1895-6. If the remainißg three months of the current financial year prove equally favourable, theßail way Department willcontribute j a very substantialquotatowards the surplus in excess of the estimates of the Colonial Treasurer which is already assured by the receipts under other Departmental heads. Tti9 railway revenue this year will probably exceed that of the year before by £100,000, while the public have received bhe benefit of various redactions in passenger and goods rates. Of course there will bo some increase in expenditure, but a very substantial margin may bo safely counted upon.
