The Auckland Swimming Club's Carnival takes place next Saturday in the Calliope Dock. The new steamer Kia Ora, now on the coast, is to-day out 2_.3 days from Glasgow for Auckland under sail. '* The Queen of Coolgardie " will be pro* duced on Saturday night ab the Opera House by Mr George Darrell. At a conference of local bodies in Dutiedin it was decided to continue Wednesday as the shops' half-holiday. Lord Braaeey's yacht Sunbeam had a narrow escape through striking on a sunken rock in George Sound, West Coast. Au English mail, which loft London on December 11th, will arrive here from Sydney by the X.M.a. Alameda to-morrow evening. The Native Land Court resumed at the Supreme Court Buildings to-day, when the Orakei and Opanake blocks were further dealt with. At a meeting of the Liberty League, Dunedin, it was decided to nominate a complete ticket for the licensing committee at the approaching election. A team of seven shots from the W*aihi Rifle Club will attend the New Zealand Rifle Association 'a meeting to be held at the North Shore, commencing on February 14th. , Tbe Taranaki Chamber of Commerce has decided to urge the Government to find an adequate amount for the expenses of sending a flax expert to Great Britain and America. Argument was to have been taken ab Wellington yesterday, in Captain Stuart's appeal against the Ruapehu judgment, bub the matter was by consent postponed indefinitely. The general public are not subscribing ab all liberally to the funds of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, and the Committee in consequence will find it difficult to make both ends meet. It is stated that one of the petty officers in the torpedo branch of the service at the North Shore is to be retired, in consequence of some friction which has occurred at the torpedo aheda at the North Head. The Theosophical Crusaders spoke at the Thames Academy of. Music last evening. They returned here to-day, and bold a meeting in Auckland this evening, when Mrs Tingley will give a popular address in " Occultism." . The Auckland Sailors' Home has been well patronised by tho eeafaring community durieg the holidays;' and has had more visitors than for some years past. There is a good demand for seamen ab present and at improved wages. Rear-Admiral Harry H. Raweon, C.8., who has been appointed to tbe command of the Niger Expedition, is the Naval Commander in-Chief of the Cape of Good Hope and west coast of Africa. His flagship ia the St. George, 12 guns, 10,000 bona, a twin-screw cruiser of tbe first class. Mr Rotherham and Mr Jackson, of the railway locomotive service, have returned from a tour of the northern branches of the railway, and have gone to Wellington. Changes in the staff of the goods and traffic branch at Auckland are being made. Mr Adams, one of the Southern cadets recently transferred here, is likely to be sent to Dargaville. It is said that tbe demand for new buildings both for business premises and private residences is decreasing, and that the cost of erection is being considerably increased by the rise in the price of labour and building materials.
