Mr F. W. Haybibtle, a well-known auctioneer, has beon appointed Chinese Vice-Consul for New Zaaland.
Lord and lady Brassey, who arrived ab rhe Bluff in bho yacht; Sunbeam, vi .fcecl Invercargill, and inspected the leading public institutions.- At the Council Hall, where the Mayor formally welcomed them to New Zealand, His Excellency delivered an address on the unity of the Empire.
M. GabriS, bho newly appointed Governor of Tahiti, arrived in Auckland on December 28th by the Tasmania, on his way to take up the duties pertaining to hia office. He was aocompanied by his wife and private secretary. Hi* Excellency the Governor of Tahiti I_Fb for Tahiti on January 20bh. accompanied by M. Bonis, Ibis Secretary, M. Tabanou, Chief of Police ab Tahiti, M. Landrodie, Judge of the Supreme Courb of Tahiti and M. Liontel, bho President 61 the Supreme Court.
At the meebing of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows on Jan. 4th in the Cook-atreeb Hall a vary pleasing ceremony took place, when a very artistic address was presented to Bro. S. Waters, of tha Loyal Britannia Lodge, No. 3,833, Wellington. Ab the request) of the brethren in Wellington, the Loyal Good Intent Lodge, No. 4,31i9, Auckland, waa made the channel by which the address should be conveyed, and bhe N.G. of tho Lodge entrusted.Bro. McLeod with the delivery. In making the presentation, Bro. McLeod spoke of bhe immense power which the Manchester Unity now wielded. Bro. Waters replied in a few words, acknowledging with thankfulness thab he had worked in the interests of Oddfellowship, bub thab all bhe credit was duo to the Order, which had praotically beon his educator. Tho addross itself is quite a work of arb. It was executed with great taste by Bro. A. E. Cousins, treasurer of bbc Britannia Lodge.
Miss Phoebe Soddon, second daughter of tho Premier, was married ab Sb. Paul _, Wollingbon, on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 13th, to Mr F. Dyer, son of the late Mr Joseph Dyer, first rosidenb secretary in the colony of the A.M.P. Society. The church was crowded to overflowing, and was beautifully decorated. Bishop Wallis, assisted by the Revs. Sprotb and Bean (brother-in-law of the bride) performed the ceremony. A largo quantity of bunting waa displayed about town, especially ab bhe Government offices. Tho presents were extremely numerous, and included a complimentary letter and purae of sovereigns from members of the Government party, a letter and a salver salver from the Opposition, and a side board from the Ministry. The bride was accompanied by fivo bridesmaids. Tim honeymoon will embrace a trip beginning with Wairarapa and extending to Sydney and Melbourne, via Auckland.
On J.'in. 15 Superintendent J. Hughes, of the Fire Brigade, was entertained ab dinner in bhe Albert-street station by the . fficers and members of the Auckland Firo Brigade, in honour of bis 65th birthday, and was presented with a massive gold ring, surmounted with shield, helmeb and croasasos, with Uio letters "A.F.8." and an inscription inside as follows: "Prevented to Superintendent J. Hughes by the officers and members of the A.F.B. on the 65th anniversary of his birthday, January 15th, 1897." Senior Foreman Harleymade the presentation, and the health oi tho Superintendent was duly honoured, Mr Hughes briefly responding and thanking tho brigade for their gift. Mr S. H.Matthews, in responding to the toast of " The Visitors,'' said that both brigade sheda and appliances in Auckland ware iar from up to (Into. The other toasts honoured during tho evening were those of tho Hon. Surgoon (Dr. Daw.on), Cnpb. Field, of the Salvago Corps, bhe, lion, members, the guests, the ladies, and the officers and members of tho brigade.
