Taking into consideration the excellent situation of the Grafton property the African Company should have a splendid field of operations for their works. KATHLEEN. This property iiaa between the Grace Darling mine and the Grafton claim, and has been purchased by tho Anglo-New Zealand Mines Investment Company. There ia a largo reef in the portion of the claim known aa the Beehive, but almost no work has been done on it so fur. The present owners are going to test this lode, and a level is now under way for that purpose. This level is going through the Grace Darling ground at present, but about 100 feet .further driving should see the intersection of the reef, and if the country now being me_ in the lace continues till then, there is every chance of tho lada being gold bearing. Tho work is being done under the management of Mr H. Marshall. KOMATA CROWN. N.Z. CONSOLIDATED MINES CO. Mr St. Auburn, suporiotending engineer for the Now Zealand Consolidated Mines Co. (Limited), accompanied by the new mine mauager, who haa just arrived from Western Australia, has been over the I Waitekauri Union properties, and made i arrangements for the position of the j low level on the Central property. I The Union properties consia. altogether of I some 700 acres, part to the north-east and | part to the south-west of tha Waitekauri '• Golden Cross, and in the supposed line ot j tha cross reef, thus catching this welli known reef at both ends. At present I prospecting operations are being carried on, and excavations for roads and buildings. An assay house haa ju*b beon completed on tho central section, Mr Dudgeon being placed in charge. Prospecting work is under tho direction ot Mr ' MeCormick, who haa some twenty men at j work, fcy.tematic operations being suaI panded pending completion of a tnpoi graphical survey, which ia being made by Mr C. C. Otway and his staff of assistants. Thia will be completed about Christmas. The low j lovel on the Central ground haa been laid ' off, and will necessitate about I,oooft of driving before the cross reef can bo expected. This level will intersect other lodes in its ceurse. WAITEKAURI. At tho Golden Cross section of this Compiny's property, development work is proceeding satisfactorily, a tine supply of ! ore being obtained from the stopes at the bick of Corbett'a level, and also from she battery level, and kiln level. Corbet.'., laveitia now advanced 1.104 feet, driving at present proceeding through the eouribry rock, and not foil&wing the raef. j When .oma distance further abead a crosscut will be started to pick up the lode agaiD. The atoping operations going on in this level r*veal what an immense lode the Golden Cross reef ia, although not half the full width of the reef is being broken out. The battery levsl ia in 443 ft pa«i the main crosscut in a southerly direction, and some fine ore ia being obtained from the drive on the reef here. This main croa.cuo is now advanced 293 feet past the Golden Crosa rssf to the \vestward, but as yet no reef or ore body has been met. At the kiln level the crosscut ia in 450 feeb from .fie shaft, and the country being passed through looks all right "but so far nothing of any importance has been met. Driving on the reef at thia level towards bhe north-east has proceeded for 226 feet, and its share of payable ore is being supplied from here for the battery. The main low level tunnel is in 1,000 feet, and progress during tbe last month has beon be.ter owing to a class of rock being meb with more amenable to ehootkig. Is id-evident soma coaeidsrable.
time musb elapse before tho remaining 6,000 feet between the face and the shaft are negotiated. At tho shaft sinking is again proceeding, aad the bottom is now down 216tt 6in. The pump and other machinery ia again working smoothly, and steady progress ehould now be made. It is intended to sink another similar shaft about 1,000 feet south of the preaenb one and bhe necessary excavations and levelling for the machinery ia almoab completed. This shaft will be 14ffc by 7ft. in the clear, and from ib tbe work of development of the south-western section of tbe cross reef will be carried on. It will thus be seen that the energetic superintendent of the company, Mr Purehas, is making ample provision for ao adequate supply of ore for the new battery. Ab the Te Ao Mar am a section bhe drive on the No. 1 reef is in 608 feefc, the lodo being still very much disorganised and of low grade. The crosscut wesb from this No. 1 drive is ia 120 feet and the croascub east 94 feeb, but in neither drive has anything of importance been met. The Magazine crosscut is in 402 feet, and ib ia expected thab the reef will shortly be meb wibh. The Gully drive ha. advanced altogether a distance of 419 feet, and ia passing through a good cla.s of country. The low level from the Grace Darling side of the range is in 343 feet. At the battery crushing operations are proceeding all right, but die supply of water is getting painfully short, aa, indeed, ia tho case all over tbe district. WAITEKAURI MONARCH. The statement of accounts submitted aba meeting of shareholders showed receipts £810, and the expenditure £657 9a 3d, leaving a balance in bank and hand of £152 18a 9d. WAITEKAURI NO. 2. WAITEKAURI REEFS. ; Two men aro opening up on the big reef and it still looka wed. Two parcels of atone assayed from the reef by tho National Bpnk of New Zealand at Paeron gave returns of £12 L od aod £3 2a Sd value per ton. The manager has now started a level to cut tho reef at the top i end of the property. This is the reef cub in tbe trench that runs through the Waitekauri Soubh property. One parcel of stone from the reef assayed £4 la 7d. YOUNG NEW ZEALAiND.
