THE QUEENSLAND CRICKETERS.
THEIR MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND,
The crickeb mabch between the Queensland beam and the local representative eleven commenced yesterday ab the Domain Crickeb Ground. Though slightly threatening in tha morning, the weather waa fine throughout the day, in the afternoon particularly. There was, however, only a very small attendance of spectators present, and apparently bhere is leas inberesb being taken in the match than mighb have beon expected. No doubb this ia owing to the rather unfavourable time of the year upon which the visitors havo come upon ua. Ab any other time than during Christmas week, when the minds of moat of the people who usually tako aa interest in the summer game are occupied with thoughts aboub other matters than crickeb, bho Cricket Association might have counted upon securing a largo attendance, and a profit, bub under presenb circumstances the present match has beon bo far poorly attended, nnd is likely to result in a loss.
Auckland's firsb innings, wibh which play opened, realised 131 runs. Towards bhe total G. Mills eonbribubed 35, Dr. Pabst 20, and J. A. Knllender 28, but bhese were the only players who were in any way successful. Mills and Kallender gave exceptionally fine displays for local cricket), and Pabst, though somewhat lucky, on the whole batted very well. In bhe bowling of the visitors the feature was the fine performance of Wilson, wbo took eight wickets for tho small tetai of 35. To the majority of tho batsmen he wa, practically unplayable, Aa tho withdrawal of stump* for the day the visitor* hud made 179 for tho loss of four wiekeba only, Donahoo (43), Jones (58), and Bradley (49 nob oub) having given splendid exhibitions of correco cricket. Tho fielding of the visitors in Auckland's innings waa, on the whole, good, though thsra wore many mistakes which ono did nob expect to sea. Hitchcock, as wicketkeeper, played quito up to his reputation, nob a single bye being recorded during Auckland's innings.
The following aro notes of the play which took place after we went to press :— Stemßon, who waa the next batsman afber Kallendor, saw a couple of overs safely, but after scoring Bix in a .horJ space of time, he got his leg before one of Wilson's aod bad to retire. 125—9—6.
Hawkins replaced Stemson, and like most of his predecessors, soon appeared ill ab ease when opposed to Wilson. His first two from Wilson beat him badly, but were fortunately off the wicket. Tbe third ho despatched by n nice stroke into Hoare's hands at square leg, bob an easy catch was not taken." A couple of singles and, a two to Hawkins, and a csuple to Wright, took tho score to 130. Another Bingle to tho latter brought Hawkins again opposite Wilson, and tha next ball he was clean bowled. 131—10—4. QUEENSLAND.—FIRST INNINGS. The Queensland Eleven opened their first innings at aboub a-quarter to four o'clock, Lewis and Donahoo being the fireb pair of batsmen. The latter, a left-hand batsman, soon had despatched two balls from Neill to the oil for two and three, bub his first over from D. Hay he played with caution, tho over being a maiden. In Neill's eecond over Lewis was smartly caught in the slips by Mills. s—l—o. Jones, who filled the vacancy, neatly placed his firsb from Neill to leg for a eingle, and tho nexb ball Donahoo drove into tbo outfield for throe, a single to the latter off Hay bringing 10 up. Two pretty leg hits by Donahoo off Hay realised a boundary and a three, and 20 appeared after a tine drive by Jonea tor three. Hay** over producing 12 runs. As 27, Kallender wenb on ab the Ho»pital end in place of Hay, the last ball of the over (a full tosser). being hit to the off boundary by Donahoo. Both batsmen continued to bab very freely, and boundary hita were frequenb. At 40 Neill was replaced by Hawkin?, bub the change barf no effect in retarding the ecorins, 50 and 60 soon appearing, chiefly through fine crickeb by Donahoo. At 65, however, Donahoo put one of Hawkins' up between the wickets, and Pabst effected nn eaay catch near tha bowler's end. 05—2-43. This was the first weak stroke thab Donahoo had made. Jji*43 had taken only 35 minutes in compilation. Bradley filled tbo vacancy, and on his arrival Stemson replaced .Callander. Throe byea off Stemsoti and a couplo off a fino drive by Jones brought 70 up, and Bradley '. opened his rcore with 3, from a nice hit to lee. Both ba.sm.n seemed to find little difficulty in disposing of the deliveries of either brundlor. Bradley sent two of three balls from Hawkins to the leg boundary,' and several of Stemson'a were de»patched foro'sand 2'a in pretty style. With the score at 91 some further changes wsro made in the bowling, Neill replacing Stemson and Hay Hawkins, but the score still continued to increase wibhout interruption, though slowly. When Bradley bad scored 15, bo gave an easy catch to Ball ab square leg, but the opportunity to geb rid of a formidable opponent was not taken. By excellent batting, bhe score gradually increased to 100, and tbe noxb 20 appeared in due course. Neill and Hay were now pub.on again in the place of Stemson and Hawkins, and the change had the effect of putting an end to the partnership, Hay clean bowling Jones, who had played faultiest innings of 58, 126 —3— i ■ Hoare came nexb, nnd treated the spectators to an exhibition of carefbl and 8 ou»d crickeb. Tho scoring after his arrival continued very slow, and it was not till 45 minutes thab 150 appeared. Ab 155 Cuff wenb on ab Stemson's end, and on the delivery of his first ball (pitched to log) Wright effected a clever catch behind the wickets and Hoare retired. 155—4— 16. Dr. Macdoaald took Hoare's,, place, and though soma further changed wore made in the bowling the pair took tbe score to 179 without any further loss, the stumps being then drawn for the day. The new-comer had played for about 15 minutes for a patiently-complied six, and Bradley had increased hia score in tho same time by IS.
