END OF THE CAMPAIGN.
A FAMINE THREATENED.
Capetown, November 28. Chickagua has yielded, thus putting an end to tho Matabeleiand campaign. The laager at Fort Salisbury is dispersing and the troops are being disbanded. Many people, however, consider the peace is only temporary.
Earl Grey intends to largely restore the Ind unas' authority under native Commissioner?, and permit them to govern their old tribal districts, The Indunas are to be held responsible for the conduct of the tribes.
There are grave prospects of fsmino. The South Africa Chartered Company has been supplying food for 40,000 natives for three months. The latter speak in the highest terms of Mr Cecil Rhodes and his immense services and liberality.
The rinderpest will make the year 1897 ono of privation and high prices. Enormous claims for compensation have been sent in, many of them being fraudulent.
