THE CONTEST FOR WAITEMATA.
The Parliamentary contest in tho Waitemata electorate will, no doubb, be a keen one. We learn that Mr Jackman, who supports tho present Government, is gaining ndberents every day aa he becomes better known throughout the district. His gensible and practical addresses, full of cheerful energy and confidence in tho future of the country, ara a reassuring coutrasb to his opponents' lugubrious predictions of woe and calamityJeremiads are not inspiriting:, even when, unfortunately, facts may justify their utterance ; but wboo, as at present, the colony is sturdily lifting itsolf like a young giant from the dark wutsera of pas* depression, we want men like Mr Jaclcman with tho hopeful courage to point out tho brightness of the future, under tho guidance of a Government which has ever proved itself tho triend of the workers, whother in town or country. Tho electors of Waitemata are apparently rapidly realising the fact that a constituency is better »erved by a representative with some go in him thne by a disappointed politician whose lamentations over the fate of the present generation of colonists seem to be his chief stock in trado. We hear from all parts of tho electorate of tho growth of support to Mr Jaekman, whoso meetings are well attended, whilo hie views in their general tone commend themselves to his hearers. A succeaeful setbler himself, he has the right to an opinion as to whab is conducivo to the intereßta of his fellow settlers.
