Recenb news from San Francisco states that Captain George B. Holland, formerly of Auckland, was drowned some two months ago on the Californian coast. Captain Holland, whose demise is announced in our obituary columns to - day, met with his tragic death in the following manner aB narrated in the San Francisco "Examiner" of September 17th:—"The little schooner Ivy, which left port yesterday for the Oregon coast, came back late this afternoon with her flag at half mast. The mourning signal waa tor the death of Captain Holland, the master of the craft. When the Ivy had reached a point about twenty miles off the Faralloneß, a northwester swooped down upon her. Captain Holland came up out of the cabin and took his station an the poop. Just at a moment when all hands were exchanging compliments on the splendid behaviour of the schooner the mainsheet was suddenly curried away at the fair lead. The sheet caught Captain Holland by the legs, and, quick as a flash, whisked him overboard. The alarm was given and the vessel hove fed.' A boat was lowered, but the sailors Eearched the eea in vain. No eign was ever seen of him." Captain Holland arrived here with his parents in Juno, 1849. He wae well known in Auckland, having Bailed out of this port in the Island trade for many year?.
