The a.r. Mahinapua, Captain W. J. Newton, arrived from the South at 11.45 a.m. to-day. She left Wellington on the 23rd, calling ab Nelson and New Plymouth, leaving the latter port at 10.15 p.m. on the 25th, arriving aa above.
The s,B. Gairloch arrived from New Plymouth at 12.15 today, with passengers, and 67 cattle, 150 boxes butter, and two tons feundries.
H.M.9. Rapid, under Captain Casement, arrived at the Mannkau at 10.15 a.m. today, piloted by Captain Robertson, the Onehunga Harbour-master. . This (with one exception), ia the first) time a man-of-war has visited the Mannkau since the wreck of the unfortunate Orpheus on the 7th of February, 1863, when Commodore Burnett and 187 British seamen lost their lives, out of a ship's company of 256 officers and men, through using an old, uncorrected chart. While this terrible lops of life was going on in full view of the pilot station, H.M.a. Harrier and the Admiralty tender Moa were lying at their moorings at the Bluff, ignorant of the occurrance. During the past few years the channel has considerably improved and the ease with which the Mannakau Harbour can now be entered, has been fully demon atrated, by the regularity with which the steamers of tho Union and Northern Steamship Companies' run in and out at all hours, eisher daylight or dark;
