AUCKLAND BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Board of Education waa held to-day, when there were presenb Messrs J. M.uir (Chairman), R. Udy, A. R. Harris, Lambe, Wright and Woodward. Chairman's Report. — The fortnightly report of che Chairman stated that Te Puna School had been closed for a week owing to the prevalence of sickness in the district. The Wairangi School Committee had been granted half the cost of science apparatus subject to the usual conditions. The senior district scholarship held by Mary L. Wilson has been vacated by resignation. The Committee of the Thames School of Miaes had been asked to place their school under public inspection, so thab holders of district scholarships might attend during the tenure of the scholarships. Teaching arrangements had been made as follows :—Miss E. R. Clarke to Newton East School as temporary relieving teacher. Miss Maud Philips to Parnell School as temporary relieving teacher.—The report was adopted.
Selection or Teachers. —The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee recommend tbatj the following appointments shouid be authorised by the Board :—Mr W. H. V. Hall to be head teacher of Waiotahi Creek School ; Mr J. S. Colhoun to be bead teacher of Obaupo School ; Mr A. H Shroff to be head teacher of Tarua School : Mr VV. J. Connor to be hend teacher of Pougakawa School ; Miss E. A. Harper to be teacher of Opuawhacga School ; Mr A. T Millar as substitute to Maramsrua Schools ; Mr F. Harris to bo second assistant Coromandel School ; Mrs Halliday to be sowing teacher, Kaeo ; Miss Garretb to be sewing teacher at Pongakawa School' vice Miss Lang resigned. It waa recommended that the names and qualification oi the following nine candidates should be submitted to the VVaihi School Committee tor the headmaatership of the school :—Messrs A. Benge, Warren, J. B. Murray, Fieher, W. H. Worsley, Whitaker, Chapman, La Prello and Omiston. The Committee recommended. also thab a headmaster for the Kirikiri (Thames i School should be selected from teachers' classified Dl, C 2 or higher, and that) the names of those teachers applying for the position should be submitted to the District School Committee.—The report was adopted, with the exception ot the recommendation re the Oliaupo school, it being resolved to submit the names of Messrs Golhonn, Blackman and SmarO to the Ohaupo Committee to choose a head teacher.
Sir R. Stodt's Opinion.—The Secretary read a letter which had been addressed to him by Mr Woodward, a member of the Board, on July 23, stating that Sir Robert Stout) was in Auckland at the time ot writing, and which suggested to the Secretary the desirability of paying to that gentleman the fee of £5 5s due to him by the Board of Education for legal advice concerning the chairmanship, and which had been owing for somo time. —Messrs Lainbo and Wright took severe objection to Mr Woodward's letter, considering that it was a very irregular action, on the part of that gentleman to attempt? bo get the Secretary or the Chairman to pay the bill, seeing that the Board bad already declined to pay the account. — Mr Lambe moved a motion disapproving of the action of Mr Woodward in so writing to the Secretary in a contrary spirit to the previously expressed decision of the Board.—The Secretary, however, explained that ho did not conaidor tha letter desired him to pay the amount, but simply to bring it under the notice of tha Executive, and on this explanation being made, Mr Lambe withdrew his motion. * ' , ' .
Board Reserves. — Mr A. R, Hariris brought up the question of the desirability of disposing by lease of unoccupied reserves belonging to the Board, —lc waa resolved that Mr Harris be requested to draw up a list and proposals to meot the matter, and report at the next meeting of the Board.
Technical Scuoor,.—A deputation from the Auckland Technical School Council waited on the Board suiting the Board of Education to take over the management of the school, as it was not self-supporting.— Mr Muckie explained t.he present condition of the school, and Messrs J. J; Holland (Mayor), R. Farroll and others, and urged on the Board the desirability of taking over the school, and spoke of the valuable adjunct which the school was to education. The Mayor said that negotiations were on foot at present for the use of the allotments above the Wellesley-street School for the purpose of erocting suitable buildings for schools. —Mr Muir (Chairman) said that on the return of Mr Cooper from Wellington the Committee of the Board which was appointed in June laat to consider technical education would be asked to take this question of taking over the Auckland Technical School into consideration.
Establishment of Schools.—An application from Chelsea for the re-opening of the school there waa deterred, peading further information. —The application for a school at Ecfen Terrace waa referred to the Chairman to report on at tha next meeting of the Board. Applications for schools at Otaika (second school asked for) and at Otara, near "Opotiki, were referred to the i»ppoctora to report. An application for an itinerant te&cher at Owena Fiats, Great Barrier Island, was deferred ponding the receipt of Mr Palmer's report.
Tender". —Two tenders wero received for building a Bchool at Mokau, in the King Country. Both wero declined, however, being considerably over the estimate, and ib was decided to erect tho school under the supervision of tho Board's Foreman ot Work?, with the labour in tho district, Tenders wero also received of £211 for the erection of a school at Katui, and £229 for tho erection of one at Awatuna. Both were declined also, and it was resolved to adopt the same course as in the case of the Mokau School.
