The quarterly banking returns show total assets a decrease oi compared with last quarter ; total liabilities, .£31,717,000, a decrease of Deposits decreased ;£812,000, and advances ;£_55,000. The total amount of coin and bullion is ;£ 7,66 2,000,. a decrease of 000. The position, however, has really improved, as the proportion of coin and bullion to liabilities is 4s lid in the £1, against 4s 10%. d last quarter. The "Herald." says the figures ! clearly show the strengih of the banks to meet demands for additional banking accommodation. The "Telegraph" says the returns clearly indicate that the effects of credit bave largely worked themselves out, and there is reason to anticipate that the great contraction in banking business will how be stayed.
