MR PATTERSON AND THE EDUCATION SYSTEM.
(To kke Editor.)
Sib, —Owing to interruption, of which the xpeakera at the late meeting suffered a considerable amount), and its being my first attempt ab addressing a large gather* ing on political questions, I was pub oil expressing my views lully on the education question, as well as same other topics. \l said that 1 supparted the State system of education, bub that "I thought it not only unfair, but almost mean, of well-to-do people to take from the public puree about three times more for the education of their childran per head than was taken for thi education of the children in the primary 8choolB," bub the following, which I was pub off Baying, 1 had in my not**. "Thai while the State supported secular education, more facility tbaa hitherto should be given by the Government for imparting religious instruction to children." In its present form, of course, I consider the education system, in common with every fair minded man, at unfair to a large esction of the people; und as I believe that young people unrestrained by religion are a danger to the State, apart from even higher grounds, I was in favour of much more facility being given for imparting religion* instruction than has hitherto been allowed. I wan aleo pat off saying thab I considered that all private schools should bo inspected and examined by the Government Inspectors.—l am, etc., J. Patterson.
